Changing Mindsets is an Office for Students funded project focused on closing the attainment gap of BME and working class students. Changing Mindsets is a student and staff workshop-based intervention that builds a growth mindset: the belief that intelligence is not a fixed characteristic and can be increased through effort.

This workshop will provide an overview of the theories of intelligence and mindset and its effect on teaching and learning. By the end of the workshop you will have an improved understanding of your own mindset and the impact of your mindset and your students’ mindset on behaviour, language use and students’ educational experience and outcomes. Strategies will be given on promoting growth mindsets, as well as exploring ways to provide growth mindset focused feedback.

This workshop will also introduce stereotype threat and implicit bias and their interaction with mindset. The origins and consequences of stereotype threat and bias in higher education will be explored and staff will have an improved understanding of the impact and effect of behaviour, language use and expectations on students’ experiences and their outcomes, in addition to ways to improve lecturer efficacy in creating equal learning opportunities. Techniques will be presented to break and reduce stereotype threat and implicit bias as barriers to student success.
