Students volunteer to brighten up local care home this Valentine’s Day

Students and staff have crafted handmade decorations for a local care home this Student Volunteering Week (10 – 16 February).

Shearwater Care Home in Milton is hosting a Valentine’s Day event for their residents this week, and asked if the University’s students could pitch in to create decorations. Students joined the University’s Volunteering Team to craft bunting and other decorations for the home.

University students already volunteer at Shearwater through the ‘Be there for Care‘ volunteering project, which enriches the lives of residents living with dementia. Students help out with befriending activities such as playing piano, board games and reading.

The impact of student volunteering

Every year over 2,600 Portsmouth students give around 53,900 hours of volunteering to the local community, including through schemes such as this. It’s estimated that this contributes over £415,000 to the local economy in time.
