Estates and Campus Services Update – December 2019

This month’s update includes details on Early Estates Investment proposals, preparations for a large conference and ResLife support services and social events for students.

Early Estates Investment proposals

The Early Estates Investment proposals were submitted by the faculties by the October deadline. An initial review has been made by the Executive Planning Group (EPG) with 10 investment proposals selected to progress with feasibility studies. Appointments have been made for architect, mechanical & electrical, quantity surveyor and structural engineer consultancy services to deliver feasibility studies with costs for each of the schemes. These will be completed before Christmas and submitted to EPG for decisions by Christmas. Selected schemes will be progressed for delivery, with the majority of works required in summer 2020, after approval has been given.

Preparations for a large conference

Conferences and Lettings (C&L) have been working with the Faculty of Business and Law (BAL) since July 2018 to bring a large conference to Portsmouth. The Social-Legal Studies Association conference will see over 500 UK and International delegates over three days in Portland, Richmond and Dennis Sciama Buildings in early April. C&L are arranging all of the services and facilities relating to the venue from catering provision and IT support to signage and additional venue cleaning.

The conference is one of the most prestigious in its field and follows the recent successful Association of Law Teachers conference, also managed by C&L on behalf of BAL.

Supporting students – our Residence Life team

Our Residence Life team is responsible for the day-to-day management of welfare and pastoral concerns of predominantly new students living in halls of residence and in the private sector. We provide support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the whole academic year.

Alongside the Res Life Manager, Res Life Advisors and Re Life Co-ordinator, every year there’s a new team of trained Residence Life Assistants (RLAs) – returning students who have experience and knowledge of university life and Portsmouth. They are based in halls of residence Monday to Fridays from 7.30pm until 9:30pm and aim to be a first point of contact for students on any issue from loneliness or homesickness to not knowing where a lecture is. All of the Res Life team provides support in the form of confidential conversations, referring students to appropriate services within the University.

The team also provides a series of social events such as film nights, games nights, FIFA tournaments, pool tournaments, art nights and Halloween parties. Our aim is to create comfortable environments where everyone is welcome. We want to make students feel at home and create safe spaces that give students a chance to relax and form friendships.

Campaigns are also run aimed at student’s safety and welfare. We address issues such as noise and how to be a good neighbour, drugs,  alcohol and general safety awareness.

We also run a programme called Fund My Idea that allows students to submit ideas for events or campaigns or even more general items which they think would improve student life. If you know of any students who have ideas please email us for an application at fundmyidea@port.ac.uk.

Feedback from students about our events and campaigns includes:

  • “Great events for meeting new people and making friends.”
  • “Good opportunities to get to show your skills.”
  • “Friendly, welcoming atmosphere.”
  • “Learned new skills and recipes. Made me more confident to cook.”
  • “I could let my creativity go wild.”
  • “Learned new information in a fun and interactive way. And won a prize!”

This year the team is focussed on increasing their visibility, using Facebook and Instagram to update students on events and campaigns.

The team is based in Bateson Hall, The Mary Rose Street,  11.30am – 8.00pm (Monday – Thursday) and 12.00pm – 8.00pm (Friday) and can also be contacted for out of hours support through the University Security Lodge on 023 9284 3418.
