Welcoming our new students

With confirmation and clearing now complete, the University will soon welcome its latest cohort of new students. Registration events start today (9 September) with events for international students. While some of this activity will take place in the new MyPort Hubs, this year the Department of Student and Academic Administration (DSAA) is also hosting a centralised event in the Spinnaker Sports Hall over Arrivals Weekend (14 and 15 September), joining up registration with a wide range of other University activities available to students over that weekend.

As part of their preparation for University, new campus-based Home and EU students have been invited to book a registration slot over the Saturday and Sunday, between 10am and 5pm on either day, enabling them to arrive, get settled into halls, then come to the Spinnaker Sports Hall to meet staff, complete their University registration, and collect their Student Cards.

For students registering over this weekend (and their parents) this is important mostly because it ensures the University can arrange for them to have earliest access to their student loan payments, but in addition to this they’ll immediately be able to join the University Gym, access the Library, pose any questions about University life at MyPort Nuffield, and visit the Students’ Union. The new Pitstop counter outside the former Waterhole bar will also be open offering the full range of Starbucks drinks, and a barbeque for hungry students and parents will be available on the patio outside Gun House Green from 11am – 4pm on both days.

Parents, guardians and partners of new students have also been invited by the Vice-Chancellor, Graham Galbraith, to a welcome presentation in the Richmond Building, where they can find out more about the University, the city and the support we offer our students. Colleagues from service and academic departments will be around to chat with parents at the event.

Students who don’t move in over the weekend or who can’t make it to Spinnaker needn’t worry; DSAA staff will be available there during normal working hours from the following Monday (16 September) until close of business Wednesday (18 September), and thereafter in the new MyPort Hubs, with students able to drop in without booking.

While all students have been contacted (and will be reminded) of their registration and induction events, the main student registration activities over the next two weeks are:

  • Progressing Pre-Sessional English Students’ ID checking and registration, Monday 9 September, Park Building 0.13
  • New International and EU Students’ ID checking, BRP collection and registration, Tuesday 10 – Friday 13 September, Park Building 0.13
  • New Home/EU/Channel Island Students’ ID checking and registration, Saturday 14 – Wednesday 18, Spinnaker Sports Hall (thereafter in MyPort Hubs)
  • Continuing international students can drop in to Spinnaker Sports Hall, Monday 16 – Wednesday 18 September, to have their passports checked, thereafter in MyPort Hubs.

Any queries regarding Home/EU registration should be directed to the DSAA Student Administrative Services team on 02392 847745 or at regform@port.ac.uk, or for International registration queries contact UoP Global on 02392 843488 or at global@port.ac.uk.
