Are you planning an event for Black History Month?

October is Black History Month, a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It was first celebrated in the United Kingdom in 1987, organised through the leadership of Ghanaian analyst Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, who had served as a coordinator of special projects for the Greater London Council. The event began in London and now it is marked with events and celebration all over the country.

Each year, students and staff at the University of Portsmouth mark the occasion with a number of events. This year some of the events being planned are an African-Caribbean Fusion Festival, a library display, a talk and book sale and a festival of films about the African diaspora.

If you’re planning an event to celebrate Black History Month, please let the Events Team in Marketing know so we can put together a comprehensive events list for everyone to enjoy.
