University staff joined by Hollywood star at first Pompey home game this season

Portsmouth FC were on winning form at Fratton Park for their first home game of the season. They beat the visiting Tranmere Rovers 2-0 in an action-packed game on Saturday afternoon.

Club owner Michael Eisner was also in town to watch the game, and brought with him a surprise guest – Hollywood actor Will Ferrell. The actor joined 18,000 other fans cheering on the Blues from the stands.

‘Dream come true’ for young fans

Among the home supporters were several University members of staff, who were lucky enough to win mascot packages and hospitality tickets in an internal ballot.

Carla Seath, from the Faculty of Science and Health won a hospitality place for her son Ronnie. She said “My little boy Ronnie’s dreams came true when he got to meet so many Pompey players who are his heroes. The University of Portsmouth winners were a great crowd and we had the best time. We even got to meet Will Ferrell which was surreal and a huge bonus. Thank you thank you thank you!”

Christine Firkins, from the Careers and Employability Service, won a mascot package, for her son James. Christine said: “James had a fantastic day with a grin on his face from the moment he arrived. The team at PiC were wonderful and made him feel welcome as soon as we arrived. He got to sit in the players’ seats, walk around the pitch and receive applause from the 18,000 strong crowd, as well as have a ‘kickabout’ on the hallowed turf!

“To top it all off he got to walk out with one of his favourite players Ronan Curtis – he even asked him if he was ‘going to score today!’ He didn’t – but came very close. James didn’t mind as we won 2-0!”

About the partnership

The tickets were made available to staff as part of the University’s sponsorship of Portsmouth Football Club. It’s part of a three-year deal as the Club’s Main Partner, building on our successful year as their Official Education Sponsor, with joined-up research, work opportunities for University students and outreach to inspire children at local schools and colleges.
