A Memorandum of Understanding and a Memorandum of Agreement have been signed to cement our partnership with the University of Caen in France. UNICAEN is an important strategic partner, with a student population of over 29,000 on 11 campuses based in Caen and around Normandy.

Colleagues at both universities are now actively developing a number of opportunities for closer and deeper collaboration in support of our shared strategic goals, from short term student exchanges to the development of shared programmes. Chris Chang (Pro Vice-Chancellor Global Engagement and Education Partnerships) and Bryony Whitmarsh (Associate Dean Global Engagement in the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences and Creative and Cultural Industries) travelled to Caen for the signing of the agreements with Joe Hall from UoP Global.

Chris Chang said: “This is an important collaboration between our two universities not least because it is a crucial part of our role as a civic University to align a number of our activities with the ambitions of the City of Portsmouth. With Caen and Portsmouth being twin cities and the role both cities played during D Day, this collaboration aligns both our universities’ interests and priorities.

“More importantly, our collaboration with the University of Caen has been ongoing for some time but this strategic collaboration now takes this to the next level, not just for student and staff exchanges but also staff collaboration both in research and teaching. This is an important part of our global engagement strategy to build partnerships with key institutions such as the University of Caen to provide opportunities for our students and staff to engage in a global environment.”

The University has had a partnership with the University of Caen since 1989 following the introduction of the cross-ferry link between the cities of Caen and Portsmouth.

The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor David Fuller, the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Leza Tremorin and the Deputy Lord Mayor of Caen were in attendance at the signing which took place in conjunction with the D Day 75 celebrations.

Bryony Whitmarsh said: “On the recent historic anniversary of the Normandy landings, I am delighted to be supporting our collaboration with the L’Université de Caen. The importance of affirming our support to Europe and continuing to proactively build sustainable academic networks, across cultures, is paramount. Recent reciprocal visits between UoP and UNICAEN have supported the exchange of knowledge and practice between a broad range of colleagues and these new agreements affirm our common values and commitments to both our students and society.”
