Students showcase their creative talents at annual Graduate Show

The creative talents of students from the University of Portsmouth will be on show at its annual Graduate Show 2019 from Friday (7 June).

The Graduate Show, hosted by the University’s Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, starts with a Preview Evening in the Eldon Building on Friday 7 June from 5 to 9pm, continuing into Graduate Show Week, from Monday 10 June until Friday 14 June, 10am to 4pm daily. Everyone is welcome and entry is free.

The Graduate Show 2019 presents high-quality physical, digital and virtual exhibitions across a wide range of creative disciplines from Architecture, Creative Technologies, Film, Games and Animation to Music, Journalism and Fashion.

Our creative students have already enjoyed success as they celebrate finishing their degrees.

·         Claire Dunford, BA (Hons) Graphic Design, won the Graphic Design Award for outstanding commercial creative flair in offline graphic design at the South West Design & Digital Student Awards (SWDDS Awards) event in Bristol.

·         Nine Graphic Design students gained a prestigious award presented by the International Society of Typographic Designers, a professional body for typographers, graphic designers and educators.

·         Courtney Hoare was selected as finalist for the Graduate Fashion Foundation TU Scholarship, one of the most prestigious prize at Graduate Fashion Week.

·         Drapers’ Graduate Fashion Week 2019 preview selected Jogaile Zairyte, a Fashion and Textile Design student, as one to watch for 2019. Jogaile was also recently featured in Elle magazine.

·         Fellow Fashion and Textiles Design student, Haochun Chen, has been shortlisted The Batsford Prize 2019.

·         Katherine-Jayne Watts won Graduate Fashion Week’s Sports and Leisurewear Award. Katherine said: “I was shocked to be shortlisted for 2 awards at Graduate Fashion Week and very pleased to win the award for Sports and Leisurewear.

“My collection, The Last Breath, reflects the essence of the sea by using materials that all have a connection with the sea. In my collection, I have combined old life jackets with the sails my grandfather once used and re-purposed old boat fenders into bags. I used old nautical charts of the coastal marshes on the Essex/Suffolk coast as inspiration for my printed fabrics.

“I would like to thank all the lecturers and staff at the University for their help and encouragement in creating my final collection. Also, special thanks to Jeremy Dale, Managing Director of SeaSafe Systems Ltd, for all his support in providing me with old life jackets and material off-cuts.”

Students are taught and guided by academic staff with high-profile industry experience such as Dr Alessandro Melis, who was recently appointed as the Curator of the Italian Pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2020, and Jared Embley, a professional visual effects artist who has worked on productions such as Kong: Skull Island, X-Men and Game of Thrones.

Placements are an important part of the University experience, but even on campus, students get to work on industry collaborative projects such as Portsmouth Comic Con, a VR robot game with Youtube inventor James Bruton, as well as research projects, such as Fatherland that explores the future of live theatre.

During Graduate Show Week, there is a Creative Industries Big Networking Night on Wednesday 12 June from 6 to 8.30pm. The event is aimed at those working in the creative sector who will have the opportunity to tour the shows, discuss collaboration opportunities and network with academics, alumni, researchers and innovation staff. Register for the Creative Industries Big Networking Night here.

After the Graduate Show, the students will showcase their work at leading venues for Graduates in London such as the Soho Theatre, the BFI at South Bank and the D&AD New Blood Festival throughout the summer.
