Pint of Science Portsmouth brings scientists down their local to answer the biggest question “What Next?”

Researchers from the University of Portsmouth will take to the stage in pubs across the city for the world’s largest festival of public science talks, which takes place from 20 to 22 May.

Portsmouth researchers are taking part in Pint of Science.

The international, three-day Pint of Science festival will see thousands of scientists simultaneously bringing their research out of the lab to share with the public in over 300 cities across 24 countries. Founded seven years ago by two UK researchers, the festival brings a unique line up of talks, demonstrations and live experiments to the nation’s favourite locals. New for 2019 is the festival theme “What Next?” – we’ll be posing this critical question to researchers working across a huge range of scientific disciplines.

University of Portsmouth researchers will be speaking at several pubs across the city, including The Barley Mow-Southsea, The One Eyed Dog, and The Southsea Village. Tickets are available from the Pint of Science website (www.pintofscience.co.uk), with each evening costing just £4. Attendees in Portsmouth will enjoy a variety of exciting talks including:

  • How digestive enzymes can curb plastic pollution
  • Discover how language can determine our perception of each other
  • Delve into the past to find what creatures once roamed the Earth

Alongside the main talks, each evening will also include a range of fun, science-related activities including, fun quizzes, geeky puzzles, engaging stories and other interactive activities.

Pint of Science was established seven years ago by a group of UK-based postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers. Festival founders Dr Praveen Paul and Dr Michael Motskin wanted to bring back the personal touch to science, giving everyone the chance to meet the real people behind the incredible research taking place across the globe.

“As the festival enters its seventh year, we’re absolutely thrilled to have Pint of Science reaching more people than ever before” says new Director Dr Callam Davidson. “This year’s festival will feature some fantastically creative events cooked up by our endlessly ambitious volunteers, showcasing some of the nation’s most brilliant researchers in their local pubs and cafes. This year has been a big one for Pint of Science, and we see some very exciting things on the horizon – join us for a pint in May and we’ll tell you all about it!”
