It’s ok to not be ok – support available

The Students’ Union is running a campaign to raise awareness of mental health and let students know that it’s ok to not be ok.

Whether it’s academic issues that are becoming too much or if it’s personal issues like family or relationships, help is always available.

Several events are coming up for both staff and students where you can find out more about the support available and how to look out for your friends if you are worried about them. There is also the opportunity to win a signed Pompey FC football shirt or ball.

UPSUok wristbands

Wristbands are available to show your support for the campaign and can be collected from the Students’ Union on Monday 1 April and Wednesday 3 April. In return, all you need to do is post a photo with your wristband and/or write a quote on the ‘Its’s ok to not be ok’ plaque.

When: 1 & 3 April

Where: Students’ Union foyer

See Facebook event page.

UPSUok Speakers event

Hear from individuals about their experience with mental health and what support is out there. The speakers will be sharing their personal stories and explaining more about support services, in particular, a speaker from Solent Mind will be attending.

When: 3 April

Where: Portland Building, room 0.41

See Facebook event page.

Suicide Prevention Training

This is a half-day course aimed at providing people with clear, practical advice on how to support people who may be considering self-harm and then linking them with appropriate professional support. It is not a ‘counselling’ course and participants will not be asked, or expected, to self-disclose their own experiences.

When: 4 April

Where: Students’ Union, meeting room 1

See Facebook event page

Win signed Pompey shirt or ball

You could win a Portsmouth Football Club T-shirt or football signed by the players by doing one of the following things:

  1. Share any of the Facebook events using the hashtag #UPSUok
  2. Write a quote on the ‘It’s ok to not be ok’ plaque at the wristband collection events

The competition is open to both staff and students.
