Vice-Chancellor and Students’ Union Sabbatical Officers to take part in Portsmouth CEO Sleepout

The University of Portsmouth’s Vice-Chancellor and two of the Students’ Union’s Sabbatical Officers will give up their bed for one night to help those who don’t have one.

Professor Graham Galbraith, Sophie Butler (VP Welfare & Community) and Charlotte Beaney (VP Sports), will be be joining business leaders from across Portsmouth in the CEO Sleepout at Fratton Park on 4 April.

The event – part of a national movement – will raise money for charities tackling homelessness and poverty across Portsmouth, including CEO Sleepout, The Roberts Centre and Pompey in the Community. All who take part have pledged to raise at least £1,000.

Graham said: “Homelessness and poverty is a growing and harrowing problem in our cities including Portsmouth. One night sleeping out is hardly representative of what it really feels like to sleep rough but hopefully this event will raise awareness of the plight of so many people. All of us who have the privilege of a home and a warm bed surely have a responsibility to do all that we can to help people who find themselves in difficulty.”

Sophie said: “Our ultimate goal is to help make Portsmouth a fairer and even better place in which to live, work and do business. This will only be a tiny insight into living without a roof, but it’s something that we can do to help people get back on their feet.“

Charlotte added: “We feel passionately about fundraising for this charity. Whilst we could never come close to what a rough sleeper would experience, this will raise vital funds and raise awareness of the issues surrounding homelessness and poverty.”
