Staff wear the rainbow in support of LGBT History Month

Staff have been tweeting photos of themselves in their University branded rainbow lanyards to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community during LGBT History Month.

LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) History Month takes place around the world every February. It celebrates the lives, achievements and promotes awareness of the LGBT Community.

Over 150 staff are on a waiting list to get a rainbow lanyard after 400 have already been given out to those who want to help promote diversity across the University. This is the third batch that the Equality and Diversity team have ordered to meet the demand after the first stock was gone within one week and the second within one day! More are on order and an update will be made on the Equality and Diversity’s Twitter account when they arrive.

Dave Small, Equality and Diversity Manager said: “It’s fantastic that so many staff want to show their visible support for the LGBTQ+ community and promote equality across campus. We have been overwhelmed with requests for rainbow lanyards and would love for more staff to post a photo of themselves on our Twitter page wearing their lanyard along with a message of why they support this campaign. “

If you have a rainbow lanyard and would like to share a photo wearing the rainbow to show your support of the LGBT movement head over to Twitter and use the hashtag #WearTheRainbowUoP and tag @uopequality. If you don’t have Twitter but want a message posted please send your photo and message to

There are other ways you can get involved. If you’re interested in joining the LGBTQ Staff Network or any of the other staff networks the University supports you can find further details on our website.
