CCI senior lecturer explores ‘the realm of the Punisher’ in his new book

Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, Dr Tom Sykes, has just published a new book entitled The Realm of the Punisher, which records the last nine years of his visits to the Philippines, a country now in the grip of a deadly anti-drugs war led by current president Rodrigo Duterte.

Tom interviewed friends and enemies of Duterte (also known as ‘The Punisher’), attended the sites of some of the crimes and witnessed an anti-government demonstration while in the capital Manila to help him understand what Amnesty has dubbed a ‘war on the poor’.

The book also examines oppressed and marginalised groups in the Philippines and details Tom’s travels to festivals, cemeteries, war memorials and a tomb housing an embalmed corpse which reveal the ways in which key figures in Philippine history have influenced current affairs.

Tom was also one of the editors of and is featured in the Pompey Writes book, which features the very best content from Portsmouth’s only independent, non-commercial news, culture and commentary website, Star and Crescent, co-founded by Tom and UoP PhD student Sarah Cheverton. The book is an anthology of local writing funded by an Innovation Accelerator grant from the faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI) and brings together top talent from both within the University and the wider Portsmouth writing scene.

Realm of the Punisher and Pompey Writes: The Best of Star & Crescent (so far) are both available to buy online.
