£1,000 business startup grants available for students

Nest – the University’s business startup incubator – are offering you the chance to apply for funding to develop your startup ideas.

Do you have an idea but unsure if it will work? Would you like some money to explore the viability of your idea? Already have an idea you wish to develop? If so, these startup grants are for you.

We have two different grants available:

  • Explore Fund: Apply for up to £300 to test an idea
  • Develop Fund: Apply for up to £1,000 to develop you idea to the next stage

This startup funding is a grant, meaning you don’t pay the money back. However we do expect to see some return on the investment in terms of business development.

The Startup grant is available to University of Portsmouth students and graduates (within 5 years of graduation from UoP) for UK based projects and businesses only.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 12 December 2018. Find out more and apply here.

Case study – Smart fashion labelling

Smart label clothing from Faye Clarke’s collection

Faye Clarke had an idea she was researching but had not considered herself as a startup. Having noticed the marketing we produced ‘Great ideas need funding’ she applied for the funding. Faye’s idea was smart labelling for the blind and visually impaired. She registered her company in August 2018 – Ma’s House Ltd.

Faye knew she had a good idea but didn’t necessarily have confidence and knowledge to know what to do next. Following Faye’s pitch we could see the potential and we offered Faye not only the funding but a specialist support package as we knew the idea was niche and would need specialist support and expertise.

The Fashion and Textiles graduate attended our Route to Startup programme and worked with her nest supervisor. Being able to provide support and encouragement has grown Faye’s confidence and she was recently selected to attend a SETsquared two day programme for digital technology businesses and a place on the SETsquared business accelerator. Faye has also been selected from hundreds of applications to receive a place on the Transformative Tech Academy for innovators.
