Sign up to be one of our Speak UP Step UP Champions

Speak UP Step UP is the campaign to develop student leadership at the University, inspiring all students to speak up against harassment, bullying, and discrimination and to step up to restore inclusion, dignity, and respect and build a culture of welcome and belonging for all.

Every student has a role to play in expressing the values upheld in our new Student Charter: Support. Community. Opportunity. Respect. Education. Speak UP Step UP Champions are role models who actively promote these values in their own sphere of influence and inspire other students to do the same.

The Speak UP Step UP leadership training challenges students to recognise the conditions promoting exclusion, discrimination, harassment or bullying and equips them to be intervene, to ‘speak up and step up’, when they see or hear someone being treated with disrespect.

To earn the right to call yourself a Speak UP Step UP Champion, and to wear a Champion’s hoodie, you will need to attend the introductory training and then submit and get approval for your Speak UP Step UP manifesto, showing how you will put your learning into practice within your own sphere of influence.

Some Champions will apply the Speak UP Step UP values within their existing leadership roles, but you do not need to be in an identified role to participate. There is plenty of support to develop your role, with regular opportunities to meet up with Speak UP Step UP facilitators and fellow Champions. You can work in pairs or small groups on joint projects, and/or you could also choose to join in with the current Speak UP Step UP project to develop filmed training resources for the next generation of Champions.

The first step is to express interest by emailing your name and contact details to
