Call for volunteers to join University Race Equality Charter Team

We are looking for nine staff volunteers from across the University, academic and professional and support, to join the University Race Equality Charter Self-Assessment Team, (SAT), helping us drive forward our race equality work and meet the challenge of the Charter principles.

In July 2018 the University of Portsmouth signed up to membership of the Race Equality Charter committing us to the Charter Principles and to producing a Race Equality Charter application. The Race Equality Charter was established to improve the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic staff and students within higher education.  It provides a framework to identify and self-reflect on the institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of minority ethnic staff and students.

The Charter covers professional and support staff and academic staff; student progress and attainment and the diversity of the curriculum.

To meet the challenge of the Race Equality Charter principles and ensure that we submit a timely, robust and comprehensive application we need to recruit nine staff volunteers to join the SAT membership, with representation from across the University at all levels.  We are keen to hear from all staff who feel they have skills, knowledge, experience and commitment to contribute.

This is an exciting opportunity to influence both the content of the application and the action plan that will help drive forward our work on race equality. Successful volunteers will join both the SAT and one of the working groups that will draft a section of the application, analysing data, developing a narrative and proposing action. It is an opportunity for cross-department working alongside colleagues at all levels, drawn from both academic and professional/support staff areas.

A session to launch the SAT will be held later in the year to ensure members are fully informed on the Race Charter principles and processes.

If you are interested in getting involved and would like to volunteer please complete the short survey below by Wednesday 17 October 2018.
