Ravelin Car Park closure from 10 September 2018

Ravelin car park will be closed from 10 September 2018 as preparation work starts for the construction of the new £53 million Sports Facility. It will include an eight-court sports hall, eight-lane 25m swimming pool, fitness suite, multipurpose studios, squash courts, climbing wall and a ski simulator. The building will also have teaching facilities, office space and an underground car park for users of the facility.

In preparation for the closure of Ravelin car park, and as part of our wider travel plan, we have put in place a number of alternative parking and travel options as follows:

  • 45 parking spaces will be available from 10 September 2018 in Isambard Kingdom Brunel multi storey car park in Alec Rose Lane. These spaces can be accessed via a pass card that will be available upon request to all staff and students with a valid UoP car parking permit. Passes will be available to collect from Estates and Campus Services helpdesk from 7 September 2018. As with our other car parks, the spaces will be available on a first come first served basis and the barrier system will not permit entry with a pass once 45 spaces have been taken.
  • Gunwharf Quays car park – reduced rate available of £4 per day
  • Isambard Kingdom Brunel multi storey car park – pre-paid, pay-as-you-go option called Park-It
  • New University circular route bus service (term timetable from 10 September to be added soon)
  • Discounts on annual First Bus pass – First bus ticket application form
  • Hover Academic Cards – discount regular travel cards for University staff and students travelling from the Isle of Wight

In response to requests from staff, we have negotiated a dedicated University park and ride service from 10 September, running every  30 minutes from 7am to 7.30pm, at an average cost of £2 per day, based upon Commuterpass 50. A route map is available to download.

Following the completion of the Future Technology Centre we recently reopened Portland Car Park making available 37 parking spaces.  We have also invested in Wiltshire Car Park with relining and resurfacing.

In response to requests from cyclists, a new cycle to work scheme is in development with tenders to be issued in September and we hope to introduce this next year. New secure cycle parking has also recently opened under Mercantile House. To gain access to the facility email campus.security@port.ac.uk to request the activation of your staff or student ID card, if this hasn’t already been enabled.

  1. Is there a reason why parking spaces beneath Melbourne Car Park, are not being utilised? I’ve heard a wide variety of stories from asbestos, crumbling supports to trolls that live in the dark places beneath the earth.

    • The parking spaces beneath Melbourne car park are not fit for occupancy, hence this is closed.
