Staff and student represent the Dental Academy at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), London 2018

Dr Kristina Wanyonyi (Senior Lecturer in Public Health) presented 3 posters and a symposium on ‘Inverting the Pyramid: Designing an Integrated Workforce for Disease Prevention’.

Dr Marina Harris (Senior Lecturer) presented a poster on ‘Evaluating Effectiveness of a Student Stress Resilience Workshop’.

Otto Sparrius (Dentist/Clinical Teaching Fellow) presented a poster on ‘Evaluating Tutor Calibration for Dental Hygiene and Therapy Student Assessment’ and Martin Sparrius (Senior Research Associate) presented a poster ‘Exploring Narrative Feedback to Undergraduate Dental Hygiene and Therapy Students’.

Latha Davda (Clinical Director) presented a poster alongside Professor Arathi Rao from Manipal University in India. The poster was entitled ‘Stress Mediated Quality of Life Outcomes in Parents of Disabled Children – a Case Control Study’. Latha also won the outstanding student abstract award for her research in ‘Migration Motives of International Dental Graduates to the United Kingdom’. 269 abstracts were submitted for the award and only two winners were chosen, this is a great achievement for Latha and the Dental Academy.

Chris Louca (Director and Head of School) was co-author on four poster presentations, two with colleagues from the Dental Academy (Otto and Martin Sparrius) and two with colleagues from UCL Eastman Dental Institute (‘Evidence Based Good Practice versus Observed Practice during Shade Taking’ and ‘Factors Influencing Dentistry as a Second Career Choice’).

One of the Dental Academy’s graduating students Amelia West also presented a poster at the conference, her research was on ‘Deprivation and Demography of Patients Who Miss Dental Appointments’.

Having so much representation at the conference bodes well for the future for dental research in the Academy, and through the efforts of staff and students the Dental Academy now has a growing profile for its research.
