MA Illustration student engages students with animation

Clare Teare, a current MA Illustration student is researching Accessible EAP (English for Academic Purposes) via a set of illustrated animated GIFs that can be used in a classroom or virtual learning environment (VLE), illustrating commonly misused academic English linking words and phrases.

The aim is to engage international students from a predominantly Asian background and facilitate the correct use of common linking words and phrases in EAP. She is researching whether animated GIFs help to facilitate learning and correct use of formal written English words and phrases.

Clare has recently given a talk about her MA project and research at the Materials Development Association (MATSDA) annual conference in Shanghai, China.

MATSDA is an international materials development association founded by Brian Tomlinson in 1993 to bring together researchers, teachers, material developers, and publishers in a joint effort to improve the effectiveness of language learning materials.

The MATSDA 2018 conference was held at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) in Shanghai, on 9 and 10 June. The conference was co-hosted by MATSDA and the Shanghai Center for Research in English Language Education.
