Departmental restructures approved to take place by August

A number of departmental restructures are taking place across the University to better align teaching, research and innovation in similar subject areas.

Staff in the affected departments have been consulted over a number of months to help shape the restructures, which were approved by the University Executive Board, and by Academic Council through delegated authority.

All changes to academic departments will take effect from the start of the new academic year on 1 August 2018. Changes to Professional Services take place immediately.

Two subject areas are moving between faculties. Journalism courses are moving from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to the new School of Film, Media and Communication in the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries. Physics courses are moving from the Faculty of Science to the the new School of Mathematics and Physics in the Faculty of Technology.

Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries

  • The new School of Art, Design and Performance brings together existing courses in the creative and performing arts
  • The new School of Film, Media and Communication includes courses in Film Production, TV & Broadcasting, Film & Media Studies, Creative Writing, and Journalism which joins CCI from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

  • The School of Education and Childhood Studies will become the School of Education and Sociology, and include some courses from the old School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies
  • The School of Languages and Area Studies will change to the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics
  • The School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies will become the School of Area Studies, History, Politics and Literature, and include some courses from the old School of Languages and Area Studies

Faculty of Technology

  • The School of Engineering will be split into the School of Mechanical and Design Engineering and the School of Energy and Electronic Engineering, the latter of which will include the Institute of Industrial Research. Some courses will also be moving to the School of Computing.
  • The Department of Mathematics will change to the School of Mathematics and Physics, which will include physics courses moved from the Faculty of Science.

Professional Services

  • Changes have been agreed to the names of two Professional Services, to better reflect their roles internally and externally.
  • As reported in April, the International Office has been renamed University of Portsmouth Global.
  • The Department of Employability (also formerly known as Purple Door) has been renamed the Careers and Employability Service.
