Student to compete in ‘Women’s Day’ cricket match alongside sporting stars

BSc (Hons) Sports Science student Emily Windsor has been chosen to play for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) for a Women’s Day match alongside big name sports stars such as former England skipper Charlotte Edwards and World Cup winner Sarah Taylor.

Marylebone Cricket Club is the world’s most active cricket club and the owner of Lord’s Ground. The match will take place at Lord’s on Tuesday 24 April with MCC playing against Middlesex Cricket.

The women’s day fixture was created following the World Cup and will take place on the main ground at Lord’s, which will be the first women’s match there since last summer’s International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s World Cup Final. The Home of Cricket hopes to break the attendance record for domestic women’s cricket in England at the match.

Currently in her second year, Emily also plays for Hampshire Women’s Cricket Club. Whilst representing Hampshire Womens 1st XI in 2017, she came 4th nationally for batting in the T20 division. She was also named Hampshire Women’s ‘Batsman of the Year’ in the same year.

Head of Sport and Recreation, Paul Tilley, said: “This is fantastic news and an amazing opportunity for Emily. The selection process justifies the hard work she has been putting in over the last few years. We’re ecstatic for her and couldn’t be more proud – congratulations Emily!”

Emily was awarded a sports scholarship by the Department of Sport and Recreation in September 2017. The scholarship provides a financial package and specialist support to student athletes to help maximise their sporting potential whilst studying at the University of Portsmouth.

Emily said: “The selection in this game has come a bit unexpected but it is very exciting! The support I’ve received through my scholarship has been very helpful, especially my Strength and Conditioning Coach and Sports Masseuse. Going into this season, I feel like I’m in a really good place, and I’m really thankful for the support.”

The matches on MCC Women’s Day will be streamed live on the internet via Middlesex’s website.
