Students and staff compete in Google HashCode

Teams of students and staff from the School of Computing tackled real world problems using their knowledge of computer programming at a Google HashCode event.

Despite the snow, staff and students were able to participate remotely to earn points based on their solutions which were displayed on a live scoreboard to demonstrate how the solution compares against the competition.

The competition gave the students a chance to practice their programming skills and to compete against each other as well as staff from the School of Computing.

This year was the School’s most successful year to date, with five teams submitting. Of the five teams, one was a staff team, two were first year teams and two were final year teams.

Their top team (I’d tell you a UDP joke but you might not get it) came 1547th out of 4856. Teams are still able to submit to the extension round, enabling the PhD team to rise to 346th on the leader board.
