“Diversity Matters” Athena SWAN Conference – Book your place

“Diversity Matters”

Booking is now open for Diversity Matters, a conference open to all staff, focusing on gender equality and diversity.  The conference will be held on Wednesday 9 May 2018, 1.00PM – 4.00PM and will be opened by the Vice-Chancellor, Graham Galbraith.

This is the University’s sixth annual Athena SWAN conference.  Our line-up of external and internal speakers will include:- David Bartlett, National Director of the Good Lad Initiative, will speak on “Understanding men’s roles in building gender equality.”

The Good Lad Initiative aims to promote “Positive Masculinity”, and in doing so, to enable men to deal with complex gender situations and become agents of positive change within their social circles and broader communities. Critically both men and women work at every level of Good Lad to ensure their work is accountable to women.

Anna Bull, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Portsmouth and co-founder of The 1752 Group will speak on “After Weinstein: Tackling sexual violence and sexual harassment to work towards gender equality.”

The 1752 Group is a UK-based research and lobby organisation working to end staff-to-student sexual misconduct in higher education. They work at a national level to educate and lobby for change in the UK higher education sector by drawing attention to the complexity and impact of staff sexual misconduct and proposing solutions to address these issues.

Another keynote speaker will be announced shortly since unfortunately Karen Blackett, University Chancellor, is no longer able to attend.

We would particularly encourage men to attend, since they were under-represented at last year’s excellent Conference.
