Find out in this edition about Estates and Campus Services activities including the Santander bike results, latest news on the Mercantile refurbishment and the new FTC building.

Reminder: Switch off your office this Christmas and keep recycling

Give your office a rest this Christmas – tick the list for a totally green office:

  1. Switch off your personal computer (click shut down via the bottom left windows icon)
  2. Switch off your office lights where you can
  3. Keep recycling ‘you are doing a great job’. Remember no food or liquids in the office recycling bins please and food caddies in kitchens really love your food waste.

And just so you know, waste collections are scaled down during non-term time as there is less waste for collection and during Christmas closure week there will be no waste collections.

Santander Cycles competition closed

The crowdfunding competition closed Friday 8 December and Santander continues to consider the University of Portsmouth’s campaign, in the meantime, we would like to thank everyone who helped:

  • The Students’ Union for marketing and social media content and Anita Butler for organising the Great British Bike Off event.
  • Motiv8 for supporting the initial bid, agreeing to be the local service provider and providing Dr Bikes events during the campaign.
  • Toby Meredith for producing the amazing video with 3rd year TV and Broadcasting students and everyone in the video – thank you!

Cafes at Christmas

St George’s Coffee shop, Portland Coffee Shop, 901, Park Coffee Shop, Eldon Coffee Shop, Blank Canvas, The Library Coffee Shop and Pitstop will close on 15 December until 8 January 2018. The Hub, St Andrew’s Court Starbucks and Cafe Coco will be open as usual from 18 December to 22 December and then again from 2 January 2018. The morning of the 22 December is always very busy with breakfast so if you are thinking of treating yourself to a breakfast roll or the whole cooked breakfast you may find it quicker to preorder the day before.

Mercantile House Refurbishment

Work continues on the refurbishment of Mercantile House building with the completion of the windows replacement and the scaffolding removal well underway. All floors will be occupied by the end of the year with the Department of Academic Registry relocating to floors 3, 4 and 9 last week.

In the new year, work will continue on the lift replacements and start on the new ground floor reception area. The refurbishment programme will complete next Spring.

Future Technology Centre

The Future Technology Centre is nearing the end of the construction phase with hoardings being replaced with Heras fencing so that everyone can fully see the impressive building. The furniture has been moved onto the upper floors and work continues on completing the ground floor and installing the IT.
