Portsmouth student wins Christmas card design competition

An illustration student has beaten over 40 entries to win this year’s University Alliance Christmas Card competition.

Georgie Underwood, a third year student studying BA Illustration at the University of Portsmouth, designed the winning image for the cover of the cards. This year’s theme was excellence and Georgie explained what inspired his design.

“I was influenced by the song, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and the lyric ‘Join in any reindeer games.’ I used this as a narrative element in my design, showing the reindeer as the winner – signifying excellence – of these reindeer games, as if they were an event like the Olympics.”

The judges were from two Alliance Universities; Kollette Super, Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Coventry University and Paul Inman, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Technology, Design and Environment, Oxford Brookes University.

The University Alliance is an association of technical and professional universities with a mission to drive growth and innovation through research, teaching and enterprise activity, with a particular focus on links with business and industry and applied research with real-world impact. The organisation will send Christmas cards to its partners and stakeholders.
