University of Portsmouth hospitality staff and students have been celebrating a double success.

Final year BA (Hons) Hospitality Management with Tourism student Jasmine (Jazz) Jenkins scooped the prestigious Tourism Student of the Year Award 2016 awarded by the Bella Rangel Callen Institute of Travel.

Her tourism lecturer, Liz Sharples, received this year’s University of Portsmouth Business School’s Inspiring Teacher Award.

The Bella Rangel Callen Institute of Travel and Tourism prize is a coveted industry honour celebrating high calibre students.

Mrs Sharples said: ” I was very pleased to receive my award however, I am so proud of Jazz. She is such a hard-working and dedicated student and deserves this recognition.”

Jazz, 22, said: “I am delighted to have won Student of the Year and am very much looking forward to visiting the Houses of Parliament to collect the award.”

Jazz was nominated because of her consistent high-level academic performance – she achieved a first in her degree – and her dedication to the support and development of other students including through mentoring and coaching.

It is the second consecutive year Portsmouth students have done well. Last year another Portsmouth Business School hospitality student was highly commended in the same awards.

The Inspiring Teacher Award is part of the University of Portsmouth Business School’s Student Experience Excellence programme which recognises lecturers who offer passionate and effective teaching for students.

Jazz will be presented her award at the Institute of Travel and Tourism’s summer party in July.
