University wins three Athena SWAN awards

athena swan bronze pic - WEBThe University has won three Athena SWAN awards in recognition of its commitment to advancing women’s careers.

Portsmouth’s Department of Sport and Exercise Science, Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, and School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences received bronze departmental awards in the latest round of national honours.

The awards, presented by the Equality Challenge Unit, encourage and celebrate good employment practices for women across both STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and – for the first time this year – non-STEM disciplines.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Galbraith said: “We want to ensure that the University supports the very best people by drawing talent from the widest pool of individuals from across society.

“This means enshrining equality and inclusivity in all that we do, so I’m thrilled to see three of our departments being named as award-winners this year.”

The University joined the initiative in 2011. Last year Athena SWAN presented the Biological Sciences and Psychology departments with Athena bronze awards, and in 2014 the University received an institutional bronze award.

More than 84 Athena SWAN awards, including seven at institutional level, were granted to UK universities from 128 applications.
