Set within the glittering surroundings of Portsmouth’s historical Royal Maritime Club, the evening was a huge success, with various charities, not-for-profit organisations, University staff and students joining together to recognise and celebrate the efforts of student volunteers and their impact in the local community.

Entertainment was provided by ukulele superstars, the Pompey Pluckers, followed by talks from organisations and students speaking about the many benefits volunteering has on stuDSCF5684dent volunteers as well as the charities themselves, delivering vital work in Portsmouth and surrounding areas.

Tony Saddington from the Shaw Trust opened the talks by detailing what they look for in their volunteers, followed by Victoria Baird from Spurgeons who gave a wonderful presentation detailing how important their volunteers are when supporting the families of prisoners at HMP Winchester.

Claire Entwistle, a third year Sociology and Media Studies student, discussed her experiences volunteering as a Cinema’s Operations Volunteer for No. 6 Cinema in the Historic Dockyard. As did Charlotte Reilly, a third year Psychology student who volunteered as an IT Support Volunteer, working with service users at the Shaw Trust.

This led on to the main awards ceremony, where twelve awards were presented to some incredible and inspirational student volunteers across a number of categories including; Best Newcomer, Commitment to Volunteering and Outstanding Achievement and Contribution. In addition to this Purple Door staff also presented Enable Ability with the Volunteer Charity of the Year award, having received several compelling nominations from their student volunteers.DSCF5657
