Top tips for getting home safely

As the evenings become darker earlier, we would like to remind you to pay attention to your personal safety and security around campus and in the city.

Here are a few top tips on 18295how to be more aware and keep safe.

  • Please be aware of your surroundings and use well-lit areas throughout your travels.
  • If you are walking home, please try not to walk alone – walk with a friend and/or colleague. The Students’ Union will shortly be sending out details of an app which can help you buddy up and travel safely (look out for updates on their Facebook page and Twitter).
  • If you are alone then, if possible, take transport. There are numerous taxi ranks in the area such as Aqua Cars, Andi Cars and City Wide, which are all very affordable, even at night time. We also have a University Bus that runs until midnight, which stops off at various points such as Fratton station, Lidl and Prince Albert Road. For more information on bus times and locations please click here.
  • If you listen to music on your travels, turn the volume low so you can still hear your surroundings.
  • Keep phones/well-lit objects hidden to avoid attracting attention.
  • Be vigilant and alert throughout your journey.
  • If you are cycling, please be sure that your lights are working and try and wear reflective clothing.
