University of Portsmouth Chancellor Sandi Toksvig joined Southsea parkrun on Saturday, which saw double the usual number of runners stepping out for the weekly event.

Over 450 students, staff and community parkrunners joined the broadcaster and comedian to walk, jog or run five kilometres along the seafront in glorious sunshine.

Having recently lost four stone and discovering the importance of sport and fitness to her own health and wellbeing, Sandi is keen to encourage the University community to be even more active.

She said: “I wanted to initiate a Chancellor’s run because I’m passionate that our staff and students should engage with their bodies as well as their minds. If our bodies aren’t fit, our minds are not going to work properly.

“The parkrun system is incredible because anyone can do it regardless of age, size and ability. There is a fantastic community feel too – we ran along the promenade and back and then gathered for breakfast in Rocksby café, which is a lovely way to start the weekend.

“I was very proud to see so many people gathered together in a swathe of purple at parkrun. The University’s sabbatical officers were particularly wonderful at promoting and supporting the event, and it was great to see them all take part.

“I want universities all across the country to get involved. You really feel amazing when you finish and I would recommend for everyone to give it a go.”

Sandi was also joined at the parkrun by Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Galbraith, Chief Operating Officer Bernie Topham and Dean of Portsmouth Business School Professor Gioia Pescetto.

Professor Galbraith said: “Sandi is a fantastic role model for the University community. I hope that students and staff are inspired by her involvement in parkrun and they literally follow in her footsteps.”
