Athena SWAN Conference – Unconscious Bias

Date: 5 March 2014
Time: 1.00pm – 4.30pm

Athena Swan promotes and supports the careers of women in Science, Engineering and Technology (STEM), and aims to address gender inequalities and imbalance in these disciplines and, in particular, the under-representation of women in senior roles. The Athena Swan conference this year focusses on ‘Unconscious Bias’ and how recognising and managing it is of benefit to others, through better/fairer decision making, for example in recruitment, promotion and workload allocation.

The conference will be opened by Professor Graham Galbraith who will discuss the role of Athena Swan in our institution.

Our first key note speaker, Professor Paul Walton, gained the first Athena Swan Gold Award for the Chemistry Department at the University of York, and he will explore Unconscious Bias in Academia. Women are particularly under-represented in technology, especially in engineering, and we are delighted to welcome our second key-note speaker, Commander Sophie Shaughnessy, Engineer, RN, to give her perspective of Unconscious Bias.

The conference includes an update on our application for the Institutional Athena Swan Bronze Award, and an opportunity to ask questions of some of our Deans about Athena Swan or issues of fairness and gender equality that affect both men and women.
