The University of Portsmouth has appointed Bernie Topham, currently Chief Executive, Eastleigh Borough Council, as its first Chief Operating Officer.

Ms Topham will join the University by early January.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graham Galbraith, said: “I am very pleased to welcome Bernie to the University’s senior management team.

“Bernie brings to the University proven management and strategic development skills, a track record of innovation and an ability to lead on demanding portfolios. She will provide strong support for the provision of an excellent student experience.”

Ms Topham has considerable local government experience, having joined Eastleigh Borough Council in 2006 from the Borough of Poole Unitary Authority where she was Corporate Director.

Previously she was Head of Economic Development & Tourism at Portsmouth City Council. She is a former University of Portsmouth external governor.

“I have seen the University grow in confidence and take its place as a successful modern institution and a positive force in the city and in the region,” said Ms Topham.

“I was very proud to be a governor, and am now delighted to join the University as a member of staff and to contribute to its continued growth and success.  I am looking forward very much to working with the Students’ Union to provide the best possible facilities for students. ”

The new Chief Operating Officer role will contribute to the overall leadership of the University with a focus on improving operational efficiency and providing excellent services to students.
