On Friday 21June, 200 ‘athletes’ gathered for the fifth annual Staff Sports Day at Ravelin Park. A record 18 teams representing academic and support departments from all over the University arrived with fun and games and raising awareness for Brain Tumour Research the order of the day.

The day started with a mass Bokwa style warm-up led by instructors Paula Walsh and Kelly Eastland and then the competition started with the traditional events: sack race, egg and spoon, bean bag, three-legged and frog ball relay with this year’s new addition, the dress-up race.

With the heats concluded the obstacle course was tackled next. Teams jumped through hoops, sped over balance beams, crawled under cargo nets to earn more valuable points.

Following lunch, the fastest nine teams from the heats competed in the finals of each discipline. The last event of the day was the tug of war where teams had the opportunity to lift themselves further up the leader board.

Awards ceremony

The awards ceremony was held in the Waterhole Bar with footballer, Ricardo Rocha, presenting rosettes and trophies to the victors. First place went to The IncredibleS beating Follow the Reader into second place and third went to We Work Out from Sports Science.

Special congratulations to Bio-Buddies who won the award for raising the most money for charity with an awesome £321.67, and to Mini Marvels who won the Paul Townley award for fair play.
