Free bike repairs and subsidised cycle training

Bike repairs

The University is hosting Dr Bike drop-in sessions to help get your bike back into shape. Just bring along your bike and any minor repairs will be fixed for free! If your bike needs more work you’ll be told what the problem is, roughly how much it would cost to fix and where to go in the city to get it done.

  • Wednesday 8 May 2013: Outside the Hub, Burnaby Square, 11.00am – 2.00pm
  • Thursday 16 May 2013: Outside the Union, 10.00am – 6.00pm

Subsidised cycle training

Pay £5 instead of £40 for a one-to-one two hour session. This is great for people who want learn to ride a bike, for those who haven’t been on their bike in a while, or for those who just want to improve their existing skills and safety. Email for more information.

Keep your bike safe

  • Keep your cycle locked at all times – preferably with a D-lock – and take quick-release parts with you. You can purchase cost-price D-locks directly from the Civic Offices in Guildhall.
  • Note the make, model and frame number and take a photo of yourself with the bike to help prove ownership.
  • When using our secure storage spaces, lock your bike frame to the fixed racks, and please challenge anyone without a visible University ID card who might follow you as you enter storage areas.

  1. Can I get punctures sorted with the repair workshop? Thanks

  2. Hello Tarek.
    Yes punctures can be repaired.

  3. The couple riding the bikes are cycling on the promenade.\They should be in cycle lane provided by the council

  4. Or maybe the council should allow cycling on the prom.

  5. In the one-one session could someone demonstrate basic maintenance, like how to repair a puncture and adjust brakes etc?

  6. Hello Michelle,
The best thing to do is contact Sustrans who are offering the one-to-one sessions and see what they can cover. They can be reached on 07747096466 or via

  7. …and wearing helmets?

  8. As an alternative to one to one cycle training or if you want to go further, there are several local clubs you could join who regularly ride as groups exploring the local countryside. You can join in with most for a few rides before joining to see if you like it and all have a wealth of experience they can pass on in terms of bike maintenance, positions, technique etc. For anyone competitive, all through Summer there is track racing at the cycle track at the Mountbatten Centre in Alexandra Park on Wednesday evenings – come and see what it’s about from 6pm, free to watch – you may even see Olympic Gold Medallist Dani King there!

    Local clubs:
    Portsmouth North End –
    Fareham Wheelers –
    Hampshire Road Club –

I ride with Portsmouth North End, every Sunday morning we have several rides split into different abilities ranging from ‘social’ to ‘sporty’, email for more details.

    • Nice plugging Jerry, students don’t exist in time for 0915 though 😉

  9. Does the University have a scheme, like the Council I believe, where employees can purchase a new bike and have monthly payments deducted from their salary?

  10. Hello Mo,
There is currently no bike purchase scheme available through the University but if it is something you would like to discuss further, please email with your thoughts or suggestions.
