IS Tuesday security tip: Gone ‘phishing’

Phishing is a way of attempting to acquire information (and indirectly, money) such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

When it comes to your password:

  • banks will NEVER ask you to reveal it
  • the University will NEVER ask you to reveal it
  • law-abiding organisations will NEVER ask for it

So please remember:  don’t hand your password over to anyone – even if they are nice.

What can you do if you are tricked? Change your password/PIN immediately and inform the IS Service Desk (University password) or your bank/credit card company ( your bank account password or card PIN number).

If you wish to discuss any issues or concerns about data security, please contact robbie.walker@port.ac.uk or mike.meredith@port.ac.uk.
