University sports scholar to represent Team GB

A University of Portsmouth sports scholar has been selected to take part in the 2019 World University Winter Games in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

This is the second consecutive time that Laurence Willows, a third year Economics, Finance and Banking student, has been chosen to represent Team GB at the games.

He first competed at the World University Winter Games in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2017 and made it to the quarterfinals. This year, he’s hoping to improve on his previous position.

Laurence has skied since the age of two, has competed in five junior world championships, is a former indoor England ski cross champion and finished second in a FIS Ski Cross race in the Czech Republic last February.

Laurence is part of a team of 38 talented student athletes from 26 universities and colleges.

Paul Tilley, Head of Sport and Recreation at the University said: “We are delighted for Laurence and his selection for GB which is justification for the hard work he has put in over the last few years. We wish him the very best in pushing for a podium position and can’t wait to follow the Games on TV.”

The World University Winter Games runs from Saturday 2 March to Tuesday 12 March and Laurence’s ski cross event will take place on Monday 11 March.

The World University Winter Games is held every two years and is the largest multi-sport winter event outside of the Olympics and is the biggest multi-sport winter event in the world for student athletes.

Laurence is a sports scholar at the University and receives financial support and other help to ensure he can compete at top level.

The University’s sports scholarship programme is open to 20 talented students a year. The University’s sport scholarship programme aims to helps student athletes balance their training and competition schedule, alongside their university degree.

Applications for the sports scholarship scheme open each summer, are awarded at the start of the academic year in September and is open to all students, irrespective of nationality, year of study or academic course.
