BAFP students win 48 hour film challenge

The Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries shares a University of Portsmouth student success story. Team Tardigrade are BA (Hons) Film Production students have won 4 awards as part of ‘The Final Stand’, a 48-hour film challenge.

The Final Stand is a brand new 48-hour filmmaking challenge that took place in Portsmouth on 23rd – 25th November 2018 at the Coastguard Studio. Anyone was invited to take part, whether they shot on a smartphone or the latest Black Magic camera. The event was hosted by industry professionals who have worked on everything from original award-winning short film projects to big budget feature film productions such as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Mary Poppins Returns, Tomb Raider and more.

Teams of 5 were tasked with creating a horror short in 48 hours, surrounding the brief “a climax/finale to a horror film”. This could range from the face-off between the killer and the final-girl or the moment the detective discovers the murderer’s identity.

There were 9 awards to be won and Team Tardigrade won 4 of them: Best Film, Audience Award, Best Directing and Best Cinematography.

”It was such an emotional rollercoaster making a film in such a short time frame, but well worth it! And for me, winning the Best Cinematography award felt unreal because we saw other beautiful films Sunday night, and I honestly couldn’t believe it. When they announced the Best Film and Audience Award were won by the same film, the tension grew and we started losing hope until we heard our team name and jumped for joy once again.” – Cristian Ionut Necula
