CCI PhD student Sarah Cheverton spoke on innovations in independent news media at the IMPRESS Trust in Journalism Conference. Speakers and panellists at the conference included Alan Rusbridger, former editor of the Guardian, Mary Fitzgerald, Editor in Chief of OpenDemocracy, and Vanessa Baird, Co-editor of the New Internationalist.

Sarah is the Editor in Chief of local independent community news website, Star & Crescent, which works with local communities to bring missing perspectives into the news. Sarah spoke as part of a panel called ‘Smart News: What’s new in independent publishing?’ chaired by journalist and director of Byline, Peter Jukes. Others on the panel were: Rachel Oldroyd, Managing Editor of The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, and Meera Selva, Director of Journalism Fellowship of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, and an expert in innovative business models for journalism from around the world.

Sarah said: “I was really struck by the high level of interest in independent and not for profit news at the conference, and its role in sustaining public interest journalism that holds power to account, particularly in local communities that have seen significant reductions in local, investigative news.

“With the ongoing Cairncross Review exploring how and whether government can support a financially sustainable future for high quality journalism, this is a very exciting time to be exploring the sheer diversity of models for independent news on a local, national and global level.”
