Dr Smith goes to Parliament

Dr Tom Smith, Principal Lecturer in International Relations, was invited to address the All Party Parliamentary Group on Human Rights to share his expertise on the extra judicial killings and state of human rights in the Philippines.

The meeting was organised by the Campaign for Human Rights in the Philippines UK and also included insights from Cristina Palabay, the Secretary General of Karapatan, the most prominent human rights organisation in the Philippines.

Also in attendance were members of the UK Filipino committee and representatives from the diaspora to discuss the UK governments approach to the authoritarian rule of President Rodrigo Duterte and the complex nature of various human rights abuses focusing primarily on the war on the drugs that has left over 10,000 dead.

Tom, who is also an Assistant Academic Director at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell, has contributed to major international news outlets on this topic since the elation of Duterte in 2016, including the Guardian, Independent, BBC,  Al Jazeera, the UN Dispatch and The Conversation. You can find links to his work here. He is currently working up a research project to investigate the Drug War and welcomes interested contributors.
