Race Equality Charter launch event – sign up now!

The University is holding an event during Black History Month to mark our commitment to the Race Equality Charter.

In July 2018 we signed up to this robust and challenging national scheme focusing on tackling race inequality across the Higher Education (HE) Sector. Run by Advance HE, the Race Equality Charter aims to improve the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic staff and students within higher education.

The event will be held on Wednesday 31 October 1:30pm – 3:00pm in Eldon Building, Room 1.11 and will be opened by the Vice-Chancellor, Graham Galbraith.

We are delighted that our keynote speaker is Dr Deborah Gabriel, Founder and Director of Black British Academics and Co-Chair of Bournemouth University’s Race Equality Charter Steering Group. Her presentation is entitled “Embedding Intersectionality into Gender Equality Initiatives: Developing a Critical Race Strategy for Equality and Social Justice.”

Dr Gabriel is a Senior Academic based at Bournemouth University in the Faculty of Media and Communication. Her research, teaching and professional practice across politics, media and communication are centred on embedding social justice and equality into teaching and learning and operational practice. She specialises in social justice pedagogy and critical race pedagogy, teaching from a critical race/gender standpoint. She developed the 3D Pedagogy Framework to decolonise, democratise and diversify the curriculum.

Dave Small and Lesley Lee from the University Equality and Diversity Team will also share detailed information on the Race Equality Charter process, the challenges and opportunities it provides and the approach we will be taking here at the University.

Please sign up at Eventbrite.

If you have any questions about the event or the Race Equality Charter generally please contact Lesley Lee, Equality and Diversity Advisor (Charters Co-ordinator) lesley.lee@port.ac.uk.
