Paralympian and University graduate Lauren Steadman swaps sports trainers for dancing shoes

Three time paralympian and University of Portsmouth alumna Lauren Steadman has been revealed as the 13th star to join the Strictly Come Dancing line up on the BBC show later this year.

Lauren, who completed a Master’s degree in Business and Management at the University, has been a Sports Scholar at the University for the past five years. During this time she took part in two Paralympic Games, winning a silver medal in Rio 2016, and became a double World Champion and six time European Champion. The University still supports Lauren today as part of her quest to win Gold at Tokyo 2020.

Head of Sport and Recreation, Paul Tilley, said: “We are delighted for Lauren to get this opportunity, which shows what an all round star she is.”

The elite para-triathlete was born missing her lower right arm, but this didn’t stop her developing a passion for swimming from a young age and competing in her first Paralympic games as a swimmer at age 15. Lauren has since specialised in Paratriathlon.

The announcement that Lauren is going to compete in Strictly came on last night’s episode of The One Show where she was introduced by presenters Matt Baker and Alex Jones.

After the announcement, the sportswoman, who has been a fan of the BBC show since she was little, tweeted:

The live shows will begin exactly a week after the World Championships on the Gold Coast in Australia where Lauren will take part in the Paratriathlon on the 15 September.

Current students can still apply for sports scholarships for 18-19 with the closing date 7 September 2018.
