Child mascots bring good luck in Portsmouth FC opening match

Freddie and Eleanor Bostock with Nelson – mascots at Saturday’s game (winners of the staff ballot for mascots)

A sell out crowd of 19,018 fans came together to watch Portsmouth Football Club – sponsored by the University – in their opening league match at home against Luton Town on Saturday (4 Aug).

A staff member’s two children were mascots for the game, chosen at random as winners of our mascot package ballot. Freddie and Eleanor Bostock obviously brought good luck after completing a lap of honour and accompanying Pompey players onto the pitch, as after just 16 minutes of play Jamal Lowe scored the goal that would win them the match 1-0, causing an eruption of cheers from huge crowds at the Fratton End.

Freddie and Eleanor’s mum, Pippa Bostock, said: “They had a fabulous time and really enjoyed the opportunity to meet Nelson the club mascot, have a kick-about on the pitch and walk out with the team. Eleanor was even chosen to walk with the Captain! Definitely a day to remember – thank you University of Portsmouth and Portsmouth Football Club.”

As the Club’s Main Partner, the University’s name and brand is displayed on the team’s shirts, in the match day programme and across multiple billboards and adverts at Fratton Park as part of a three-year sponsorship deal. The partnership builds on our successful year as their Official Education Sponsor, with joined-up research and outreach to inspire local children.

10 girls from the UoP girls junior team attended the game with parents

Ten girls from the University’s new under 9 and under 11 girls football team were invited to attend the game as a welcome to the University’s Community Football Club. This is part of an initiative called Wildcats funded by the Football Association to get girls from the local community excited about football and the match was an excellent way to celebrate the two new age groups and show off their new kit.

Discounted tickets for staff and students

Discounted Purple Tickets are available for staff and students for all other home league matches for the same price as last year – £15.

The 2018/19 fixture list has details of all home League One matches including the final match on 4 May against Accrington Stanley.

Tickets are available to buy online via the Club’s website. Once staff and students have selected their match seats, you should select the “UOP (Student ID required)” ticket option for £15 and choose whether you want tickets delivered or collected at Fratton Park. Please take your student/staff ID card with you to show stewards.

As well as discounted tickets, the partnership with the Football Club will provide a number of collaborative health and education opportunities, student placements at the club, discounted use of the grounds and facilities, as well as engaging players in the University’s outreach programme with local schools and colleges to help inspire children to apply for university.
