Staff get together for staff party and successful open days

Over 2,600 people attended last week’s summer open days, a 45% increase on last year, and hundreds of staff enjoyed a fun evening at the staff party.

Both the Wednesday and Saturday open days were hot and sunny enough to make the guests feel like they were on holiday, complete with ice cream and deck chairs in Ravelin Park where they could relax after registering and listen to the University Gospel Choir.

After receiving their goodie bags, the students had a wide choice of talks and tours to attend around campus, including a walking tour, a coach tour of the city and tours of a number of halls of residence. As well as subject related talks, students also heard from departments such as Housing and Finance to help prepare them for their university experience.

These events are very important in the recruitment cycle as it is the students’ first look at who we are and what we can offer them, and we appreciate the efforts of the staff who made these events such a success.

Staff were thanked and rewarded for their efforts in the past year with the annual Summer Staff Party. Hundreds attended on another sun-soaked evening and were greeted by some up-beat jazz music by our saxophonist.

The photo booth provided hours of entertainment with a number of seaside related props and staff received a print out of the photos as a memento of the evening. Staff also enjoyed playing oversized versions of childhood favourite board games such as Jenga and Connect Four.

Staff took to the dance floor after enjoying a meal and busted out some moves to classics such as Cotton Eye Joe, Welcome to the Jungle and Stayin’ Alive. Many were ‘stayin’ alive’ until the last song to sing along to popular football anthem ‘Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home)’ by The Lightning Seeds in excitement for England’s World Cup game.

The next (less tropical) open days will be in the autumn on 6 October and 10 November at Portsmouth Guildhall.
