Windows 10 roll out for staff and students

All PCs and laptops used by staff and students will be upgraded to Microsoft Windows 10 operating system. Computers used by students, as well as in lecture theatres and meeting rooms will be upgraded by September in time for the start of the academic year.

The roll out of Windows 10 for staff will begin this month (June) and be completed in December 2018. An email will be sent to you with more information of when your PC will be upgraded. Your department should have a ‘Champion’ who will be your point of contact between your department and the Windows 10 Project Team.

Windows 10 Training and familiarisation materials are available to offer support for staff to get familiar with the new operating system.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Service Desk on 023 9284 7777.

  1. The MacBook in the picture at the top of the article is probably not going to be upgraded to Windows 10!!

    • Thanks for the advice Andrew. We weren’t 100% sure if it was a MacBook or not. It was surprisingly difficult to find a free to use photo of a laptop which wasn’t a MacBook. But we’ve updated the photo with a homemade effort. Thanks again

  2. Will our hard drive be re-imaged and lose all of our installed programs?

    • Yes upgrading to a new operating system involves wiping out the drive and putting a brand new operating system on it. Existing locally installed applications will not be present in the new OS. If you need more information about this please contact the Service Desk – servicedesk@port.ac.uk.

  3. We down graded our home PC back to Windows 7 because we couldn’t find anything. If I do work at home, will it be compatible?

    • Hi Fiona, I have checked with the team and this shouldn’t be an issue.

  4. I’m part of a team of 13 which permanently works remotely in Lincolnshire. Is the upgrade something which is done remotely, or will someone come out here to perform the work?

    • The upgrade cannot be completed remotely. The project team will contact you directly to discuss the options.
