First year students are ‘app developers of tomorrow’

Three first year students from the University have won first prize in a competition designed to find the app developers of tomorrow. The competition, by KYOCERA Document Solutions, wanted university students to apply their mind to find new talent for technical and sales staff of the future.

Kevin Navarro, Muklek Bokth and Matus Minarovic from the School of Computing entered the competition and were tasked with designing, building and presenting an application that meets a real business need and challenge, followed by training on how to develop the concept, before testing and presenting the end product.

Kevin said: “We were tasked with designing, programming and formally presenting our idea in a business environment. We had to build an application for the operating system which runs on their Multifunctional Printers.

“Our idea was Ez-Translate. A document translation application where the user can scan or load from USB a document and then print a translated version.”

The students came in first place, winning £1000 of Apple vouchers each, as well as benefiting their careers with this experience.
