Diversity Matters – Action Plan Themes revealed at gender equality conference

Themes for the University’s Action Plan to increase gender diversity at all levels were revealed at its ‘Diversity Matters’ conference, after the University retained a national award for its commitment to gender equality.

The Athena SWAN Bronze Award Action Plan details areas of work to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect academic women. The Action Plan will help the University apply for a Silver Athena SWAN award in 2021.

The full Action Plan will be published on the University’s website shortly, but the themes include:  

  • Embed gender equality & Athena SWAN across the University
  • Tackle gender pay gap across the University
  • Address intersectionality of gender and race
  • Ensure recruitment policies and practice support achievement of gender equality
  • Enhance career development and promotion opportunities, particularly for female academic and research staff and increase women in leadership positions
  • Ensure the University provides flexible, family friendly working environment
  • Promote positive inclusive gender culture
  • Ensure the University provides safe, supportive and inclusive environment for trans staff and students

More than 160 staff attended the conference, including an increased proportion of male attendees from 20% last year to 29% this year.

The University’s sixth annual Athena SWAN conference included presentations from Dr Daniel Guinness from the Good Lad Initiative about understanding men’s roles in building gender equality, and Dr Anna Bull from The 1752 Group, about tackling sexual violence and harassment to work towards gender equality.
