Portsmouth professor to star in new BBC series

Professor Deborah Sugg Ryan, Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, is to star in a major new BBC series called A House Through Time.

The single terraced house on 62 Falkner Street in Liverpool.

The four-part documentary, which starts on Thursday 4 January at 9pm on BBC Two, will tell a story of Britain from the 1840s to the present day, through the residents of a single terraced house on 62 Falkner Street in Liverpool.

Searching through city archives, scouring records, and tracking down their living descendants, presenter and historian David Olusoga tells the untold stories of the people who once lived in the house and gains a unique insight into the making of modern Britain.

Professor Sugg Ryan will feature each week as the expert on the history of the interior and she also has a credit on the series as a consultant.

Over the course of four episodes, A House Through Time will paint a unique portrait of Britain – one that connects a single house to the fortunes of a city, a nation and ultimately the wider world, and how history affects its residents.

Knitting together the intimate and the grand, the detective work will paint the house’s residents onto a greater canvas of history as the residents are affected by changes in global politics, economics and immigration.
