Christmas Jumper Day and Festive Fundraising

Friday 15 December is Christmas Jumper Day. All over the country people will be donning their silliest, most festive Christmassy jumpers to raise money for Save the Children.

Save the Children is a charity that promotes children’s rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries through better education, health care, and economic opportunities.

You can help make the world better with a sweater by donating online or via text message:

Donate £5 via text

  • Text CHILD5 to 70008 to donate £5 to Save the Children’s East Africa Food Crisis Appeal (until 31 December)
  • Test SYRIA5 to 70008 to donate £5 to Save the Children’s Syria Emergency Appeal (until 31 December)

(You’ll be billed £5 plus the cost of a standard rate text message, and Save the Children will receive 100% of your donation.)

The International Office are also fundraising during this festive season. You can donate to their Christmas Jumper Day fundraising by popping over to see them on Floor 1 of the Nuffield Centre and wearing your merry winter woollies.

Donations for the homeless

You can also get involved with their Reverse Advent Calendar which involves putting a donation into a box every day to provide a little something for those in need. They are collecting for two local charities: Two Saints, a homeless charity in Portsmouth who look after local young people aged between 16-25 and Lifehouse, a homeless drop-in and soup kitchen in Southsea. Just bring your donations over to the International Office before Christmas.

The Faculty of Humanities is also raising money for the homeless this year with local charity, Helping Hands Portsmouth and are asking for goodies to fill Christmas boxes to distribute on the city’s streets before Christmas. Contact Nadine Hodge in Park Building until 22 December to donate.

Donations for the elderly

The Postgraduate Centre in the Faculty of Business and Law are collecting donations for presents for older patients in QA Hospital as many have to stay in hospital over the festive period and may not have family or friends to visit them or give them gifts.  The PG Centre have a collection point (Room 3.56 Portland Building) and the collected donations will be taken up to QA Hospital before Christmas. Please wrap up any donations, and clearly mark if they are for a male or female by 4.00pm on Tuesday 19 December.

So bring in or donate a small gift this Christmas for the homeless or the elderly and encourage your friends and colleagues to wear their cheesiest Christmas jumpers on Friday to raise money for Save the Children.
