Christmas Advice from Student Housing

fb banner 3 (2)Season’s greetings from the Student Housing team!

The holiday season is upon us and the end of your first term is nigh! Many of you will be heading home for the holidays to enjoy some old fashioned home comforts! However, don’t forget your home from home in Portsmouth before you depart.

Student Housing have created three more articles to give you pointers about home security, good neighbour relations and rubbish disposal before you leave which you can find on the MyPort news pages (links will also be provided on our Twitter feed).

Here are some general tips to get you started on your Christmas prep before heading home:-

• Let your landlord/letting agency know when you are all away so in the event of any emergencies, they will know your movements. Do not put that you will be away on social media!
• If you have a good relationship with your neighbours, ask them to keep an eye on your house while you are away and pass on contact details in case any problems come up.
• It is also advisable to take precautions against the cold weather. The water mains can be turned off to stop pipes freezing and bursting, or you could set your heating times to come on low for a few hours in the evening. Check that long-range forecast at the Met Office website perhaps.
• If you have an electric key meter don’t forget to make sure there is enough credit in the meter to cover you whilst you are away. There is nothing worse than returning to your home and it being cold, musty and the freezer has thawed out…
• …following this, empty the fridge before you leave. It’s not nice to return to a stinky fridge from rotted food.
• Don’t waste your electric. You don’t need the scary bills and turn off/unplug things on standby to reduce your fire risk and you’re doing your bit for the environment.

And for some non-housing Christmas advice, but good things to remember and sort out:-

• Money – budget carefully for gifts, parties etc. If you want some great advice about all things to do with your money, please get in touch with our colleagues in Student Finance. All their contact details are available on their MyPort pages: www.myport.ac.uk (click on the piggy bank icon on the homepage)
• Book your travel – get your seat on the train/coach/plane reserved! Christmas travel is hardcore, so make sure you get a space on your preferred mode of transport! There are some good student deals to be had, so dedicate the time to it. Also, don’t forget to pick up your bags and gifts when you get off your train or coach #voiceofexperience
• Get as much work done as you can before you leave. You won’t have a very happy new year if you leave all your semester one deadlines to the last minute! If you are under pressure or need some advice on managing your deadlines, get in touch with the Academic Skills (ASK) team: https://kb.myport.ac.uk/Article/Index/12/4?id=2747#
• Also don’t forget to return any library books that might expire over Christmas. Get in touch with the Library team for advice on this: www.myport.ac.uk (and click on the book icon).
• Look after yourself and your housemates during the festive periods. Work deadlines, money worries, home life, romantic life and everything else that can cause stress points at this particular time of year can make things less than happy for folk. If you or someone you know needs some help with your/their mental wellbeing, get in touch with the many, many support services here at UoP: www.myport.ac.uk and click on the little first aid box icon.

All that’s left to say is have a fantastic Christmas and all the best for 2018!
