Portsmouth graduate named as one of the UK’s most influential black people

A University of Portsmouth graduate has been named as one of the five most influential black persons in the country.

Dr Nira Chamberlain, who graduated in 2013 with a PhD in Mathematics, was the highest new entrant in the 2018 PowerList in at Number 5.

This is the first time a mathematician has made into the Top 100 Britain’s most influential people of African and African-Caribbean Heritage.

Dr Chamberlain is Principal consultant in Data and Decision Sciences at Babcock International. He writes mathematical models/simulation algorithms that solve complex industrial problems.

Dr Chamberlain is also listed by the Science Council as ‘one of the UK’s top 100 Scientist’. In 2015, he became the first Black mathematician to join the exclusive list of distinguish living British mathematicians who feature in the biographical reference book Who’s Who.

When asked what he enjoyed most about the course, Dr Chamberlain said “Sharing and discussing mathematical ideas with the lectures and fellow PhD students.”
